How Your Choice of Garbage Bags Can Help Combat Ocean Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, threatening marine ecosystems and communities worldwide. At Swish, we're committed to tackling this crisis head-on.  Our surprising solution? Garbage bags. Through an innovative collaboration with Plastic Bank® and W. Ralston, we're revolutionizing waste management while actively contributing to the global fight against ocean plastic pollution.

The Plastic Pollution Crisis

Plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, with an estimated 8 million metric tonsof plastic entering our oceans yearly. This waste harms marine life, contaminates our waterways, threatens human health, and degrades coastal ecosystems. Plastic pollution knows no boundaries, from remote beaches to bustling cities, posing a significant challenge for communities worldwide.

Introducing Social Plastic®

Plastic Bank® is pioneering a revolutionary approach to tackling plastic pollution through its Social Plastic® initiative. By incentivizing local communities to collect and recycle plastic waste, Plastic Bank® is turning trash into treasure. Through a network of collection centers, Plastic Bank® empowers impoverished individuals to earn a living while cleaning up their environment. This innovative model prevents plastic from reaching our oceans and creates economic opportunities for marginalized communities.

Swish's Commitment to Sustainability

At Swish, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We recognize the importance of reducing our environmental footprint and investing in solutions that benefit both people and the planet. We're proud to partner with Plastic Bank® and W. Ralston,  for our Clean and Green® garbage bags. Made from recycled resins from ocean-bound plastic, our garbage bags offer a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, helping to close the loop on plastic waste and supporting a circular economy.

The Process

Across several countries, local families collect plastic from ocean shores, rivers, bays, and streams in and then transport it to Plastic Bank® centers, often called "Banks". Here, individuals exchange the collected plastic for tokens that can be used to purchase goods, services, and food, thus providing an economic incentive for plastic collection.

Once the plastic arrives at the Plastic Bank® centers, it undergoes a rigorous sorting process to separate it by type and quality. After sorting, the plastic is cleaned and processed into pellet form. These pellets are then repurposed and reused to produce Swish Clean and Green® garbage bags.

Making a Difference Together

By choosing Swish Clean and Green® garbage bags, you manage your waste and make a tangible difference in the fight against ocean plastic pollution.
